Colombian President Uribe,a US trained imperialist thug, visited DC on May 2 to push the embattled US-Colombia Free Trade area. He was over an hour late to his event at 1333 H st-and was confronted in person, face to face, when he arrived!
An estimated 200 protestors were on hand, and at first it appeared he would do a Tony the Rat and try to wait everyone out. Finally he arrived-and his offer to meet a delegation of three people was rebuffed.
He then agreed to answer questions outside-and received a torrent of outrage for the union leaders and members of the Afro-Colombian community he has butchered. His Secret Service bodyguards pressed in close but made no attempt to break up the scene.
Prior to his arrival, protesters picketed loudly, waiting for him to show and denouncing the proposed US-Colombia Free Trade area.
There is overwhelming evidence of continued official suppport for right-wing paramilitary groups-and of routine murder of union organizers. As a result, the proposed FTA is considered the least likely of all the bilateral FTA's to pass the Democratic-controlled Congress.
2:
Code Pink and many other groups protested in Lafayette Park on May 2, the day after Bush vetoed the Iraq war funding bill over his distaste for eve unenforceable withdrawal date "guidelines." About 100 people showed up, with a giant "Mission Accomplished" banner as backdrop. Since May 1 was the 4th anniversary of that infamous event, the Dems picked that day to drop the Iraq supplemental on his cursed desk.
While MoveOn tried to order an impeachment chant shouted down, they were not sucessful and Code Pink later sang an impeachment song.
Since the veto stops the war funding bill, Midge Potts initally stayed opposite the protest in the park, as it is the war-NOT the veto, that she felt(and I agree) needs protesting.
There is a lot of sentiment that the next thing up is to make sure that the next version of the Iraq war funding bill again contains conditions that force Bush to veto it-again and again.
