(AUDIO 5 min 8 seconds)
The Coalition of Immokalee Farmworkers vowed "Burger King is next" after McDonald's agreed to pay a penny more per pound of tomatoes picked. On April 28 CIW supporters delivered on this in many cities-including right here in DC at 5th and G sts.
Protest chants and songs used a lot of imagery of toppling royalty, including "Down with the King-off with his head!" This of course is in response to Burger King's "Kingly" image.
Of course, with Burger King tomatoes still being picked at the rate of 2 1/2 tons per $50 daily pay, this is in the tradition of how kings always treated those they regarded as their peons.
At the end of the rally, a delegation went inside to present a letter to management, just like each time at McDonald's. It took over ten minutes to get the manager's attention, but he finally accepted the letter and was informed that everyone's "beef" was with BK corporate management, not any particular branch or its workers.
